Cornelius (who also wrecked multiple of his own marriages) gassed him up as the next big up and coming bodybuilder. Then he competed at shit show Rooby and got 3rd. Still never gave up his delusions and legit thought he could go pro. His wife was probably trying to talk sense into a 35 year old man becoming a bodybuilder for the first time ever, and probably gave him an ultimatum that he ignored.
