What is a Jew exactly? Is it a race or a religion? I have a buddy with a Jewish sounding last name (Rabbetz) and he says he was raised Lutheran.
Both. It’s a race, and the religion is race based.

Some (racials) jews become atheist like Andjew or convert to other religions like your buddy.
They’re actually not allowed to discriminate against converts by religious law. How that works in practice, I have no idea.
That said, I’ve heard that they make it really fucking hard to convert and the numbers are super low.
This one atheist jew told me 15 yrs ago that he told his parents religion was dumb and went full fedora tipper. But he was a purebred jew.
His cousin was only jewish on his father’s side and therefore not jewish by jewish law. The guy was esstremely passionate about religion, studying the Torah etc.
Guess what? Everyone in the community respected the fedora tipper more simply because he was a “real jew” to them.
