Why exactly will people not get in jail or assets frozen when not paying hospital bills? I mean in Lennys case obviously there are no assets but will the state not put him in jail for not paying?
By US law, you cannot go to jail for not paying civil debts. Of course, this same protection doesn’t exist for not paying taxes.
If you don’t have the income to be garnished, like talked about earlier, the debt collection agency can request the court to ask you to appear for the debtor’s examination. If you do not appear, the judge can issue a warrant for your arrest.
Don’t get it twisted. You will not go to jail for unpaid medical debt. But you will go to jail for ignoring a court order.
Also, debt collectors know bums like Lassie don’t have 2 nickels to rub together, so they’re not going to even bother suing him. They just write it off as bad debt and pass the costs on to the next person that’s actually responsible and pays their bills, which increases the cost and is a huge contributing factor to rising cost of living and medical expenses. Lassie has zero self awareness and doesn’t realize dip shits like him are part of the reason the middle class over here is being eroded, but they’ll go on a podcast and bitch about it unfortunately.
Despite what you may think, America doesn’t just throw everyone in jail for anything, unless your a PM, then the bar is set very low for imprisonment. Think about it, there’s 350 million people here.
